Seeing Double – The Awe Factor

Double flowers are generally ‘Gardener bred’ and not naturally available in the wild.

Doubles are harder for insects to pollinate and therefore single flowers have survived and evolved more readily.

Double flowers were the aim of many Victorian breeders and plantsmen as they sought the awe factor.

These blousy double Peonies have this Awe factor with both colour, double petal form and a tremendous scent.

History of Double Flowers

  • Double flowers are the earliest documented form of floral abnormality.
  • Theophrastus mentioned double roses in his Enquiry into Plants, written before 286BC.
  • Pliny also described double roses in 1st century BC.
  • In China, double peonies were known and selected by around 750AD.
  • Around 1000AD double varieties of roses were cultivated to form the China rose. Tod

If you’re purchasing compost or manure

If you’re purchasing your compost or manures (or even top soil) do be aware that herbicide residues do exist and can create conditions that restrict the growth of plants.

For example, aminopyralid is registered for a wide variety of crops and has created enough problems in the UK to have its registration pulled (technically Dow asked to have it pulled) Having said that, the residue does persist in manure and composts so if you purchase products with residues, you might see stunting and leaf curl on susceptible plants such as tomatoes.

the glass shower wall blew out and broke but it did not fall of the hinge

i dont understand, no one was in the room and the glass just blew out. it did not fall out of the hing it blew out.

Hello, everyone! I know, Mad Men is most likely not new for you, but believe it or not, I just started watching it (living in Europe leads to this kind of consequences). I’m at first season and slowly catching up with all the episodes, hoping that one day I can proudly say that I’m in a row with everybody.
