Genesee County Habitat for Humanity finishes projects around Flint on MLK Jr. Day

FLINT, Michigan — Volunteers spent Monday morning building sheds at the sites of previous Habitat for Humanity builds as a way to give back on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Holly resident Jeff Raupp has volunteered the last 10 years on the holiday in Flint and Detroit, and said he does it regardless of his own job situation every year.

“It’s because of (King), because of the day, because of our beloved community,” Raupp said. “It should be a day to get out and remind yourself of things.”

Sheds were constructed to provide extra storage space at houses Habitat for Humanity has worked on, as these houses do not have garages.

The holiday normally provides a lot of volunteers looking to give back and celebrate King’s work, said volunteer coordinator Ryan Johnson.

“It’s really a day where people can show what today means to them,” Johnson said. “People are wanting to do things for other people.”

This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day brought fewer volunteers than last year, but only because the shed builds on Stockton Street were not big projects.

Genesee County Habitat of Humanity partnered with the University of Michigan-Flint for their volunteer service day. Students and citizens could also volunteer at Adopt-a-Pet, Carriage Town Ministries, Crossover Ministries, the Genesee County Humane Society, My Brothers Keeper, the Shelter of Flint, the Whaley Childrens Center or the Whaley Historical House.
