Kalamazoo homegrown tomato taste-off contest coming next month

KALAMAZOO   Gardeners can get bragging rights for their homegrown tomatoes if theirs are selected by participants as winners during the Tomato Taste-off from 10  a.m. to noon.Saturday, August 27, in the Walnut Room of the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services, 3299 Gull Road in Kalamazoo.
 

To participate, bring approximately 20 small tomatoes, 4-5 large or green tomatoes, or 6-8 paste tomatoes from your garden.

Whole tomatoes may be registered for competition between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Tomatoes and other fresh produce will be featured in a cooking demonstration.
 
Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand at the  “Ask the Expert” booth,  and information about preserving the harvest, saving seeds, ways to gift your harvest, plus identification of common pests and diseases will also be available.

Door prizes, craft activities, and refreshments will be offered, too, at the event, co-sponsored by the Kalamazoo MSU Extension Master Gardener Program, Kalamazoo in Bloom, and the Kalamazoo Garden Council.
